A word from Shirley Rentzel. . . 

About Rentzel's Bird Farm?  I always laugh when someone asks how we got started in this business of exotic birds, bird food, bird toys and acessories.  Believe it or not, it all began one day when when my husband and business partner, Dean, was out eating lunch at a McCrory's store lunch counter in York, PA. (As a former McCrory's employee who lost his job when the chain started to fail, he was already employed elsewhere at the time.)

While at lunch, Dean learned that there had been a pet shop in the store that was now closed.  He called me to say, "I think we should open our own Pet Store as there seems to be a need around here."  So, we did!  We invested all of Dean's severance pay in the business and then took a lot of courses and relied upon a lot of people for advice before we were off and running.  Dean still worked a full time job for the first five years while working in our store on weekends from 5PM to 9PM, and I ran the store from 10AM until 9PM every day.  Talk about having no life!  We could not have been more tired; and we thought about throwing in the towel many times, but we just kept putting one foot in front of the other.

After a few years in the pet industry, we found our passion for birds, and we decided to specialize in the care and well being of our exotic feathered "kids".  Dean and I have both since become certified avian specialists through PJACs.  However, our true knowledge and expertise with exotic birds has come from owning and handling the birds and communicating with other bird owners. 

Our store, the Rentzel's Bird Farm, has continued to serve the local York county, PA market; but more recently, we had reason to expand to include the online community.  Because of a car accident, Lisa Minnich - a fellow bird shop owner - had to close her store and online business due to her sustained injuries.  She was kind enough to direct her online customers to Rentzel's Bird Farm.  Her only condition was for us to open an online store in addition to our physical location in Windsor, PA. 

That's how one thing lead to another, with Lisa dragging the Rentzels into the 21st century. Life always works out!
